Exploring distant parts of the globe via Google Street View is an activity many have enjoyed doing at some point.
However, it’s often overlooked that these images are captured by individuals driving around in specially equipped vehicles. A Reddit user who works as one of these drivers shared insights into the job, highlighting some of the awkward encounters it can entail.
Google Maps, used by approximately 2 billion people each month worldwide, is a crucial tool for many. One of its most popular features, Street View, has been available since the late 2000s.
This feature allows users to view street-level scenes from roads in more than 80 countries, making it a favorite for curious individuals everywhere.

Yet, with its extensive use, these Google Street View cars have gained a form of celebrity status.
Drivers face a unique challenge as the cars, with their prominent rotating camera turrets, are easily recognized by the public eager for a photo opportunity.
On Reddit, the driver described how this behavior from onlookers complicates the job and also shared details about the hiring process and salary for Google drivers.
The driver, using the alias GoogleDriver419, explained that when people try to get captured by the car’s camera, it complicates their work. They stated, “I have to do my best to avoid getting you in the shot. Please don’t stand in the middle of the road waiting for me to get you on camera.”
However, the most challenging aspect, according to the driver, is when people stop them for a selfie. “People ask me to take their picture WITH the car, standing next to the car with their camera, etc… If I’m tired, I just ignore them,” he mentioned.
When faced with persistent individuals, the driver shared a strategy: “If they keep insisting, I’ll usually pretend I’m going to take their picture and like do a selfie and just [drive] away.”
One Reddit user recounted a time they spotted a Google car outside a 7-11, only for it to speed away as they tried to photograph it, which they labeled a ‘d*ck move’.

The driver offered a straightforward piece of advice for those trying to snap a photo: “If we lock eyes, it’s a race against time for me to leave as soon as possible.”
For those intrigued by the idea of driving around remote roads for Google, the pay might be a consideration. The employee revealed that drivers earn about $30,000 annually.
The workday varies based on traffic conditions. “The day lasts as long as it has to, meaning if I get all of the data needed for the day, I’m done,” the driver explained on Reddit.
“If there’s traffic or a guy messing around, the day will take much longer.
“Usually, I try to stay away from rush hour traffic and just work nonstop in between everyone else’s workday. Less people on the streets, less cars, much easier.”
Even if the prospect of being constantly photographed at a low salary doesn’t deter you, GoogleDriver419 has some sobering news. You can’t actually apply directly for this position.
“They don’t advertise it as a Google driving job, just as a temp driving job. It’s random,” he noted.
