Grandma and the unexpected guest she mistakenly invited to Thanksgiving celebrate their 10th year together

An unexpected text message led to a heartwarming tradition between a grandmother and a stranger who now celebrate Thanksgiving together annually.

A decade ago, Arizona grandmother Wanda Dench intended to text her grandson to coordinate Thanksgiving plans but mistakenly sent the text to someone else.

What could have been a simple mistake transformed into a cherished annual gathering.

Dench accidentally contacted teenager Jamal Hinton, who requested a photo to verify her identity. Upon realizing her mistake, Dench received a playful response from Hinton, which paved the way for their enduring friendship.

Hinton humorously asked if he could still come for a meal, and Dench graciously extended the invitation to him for Thanksgiving.

Since then, they have gathered each year, with 2025 marking their tenth Thanksgiving together. Both have spoken to People magazine about the widespread attention their story has received and how it has enriched their lives.

Dench remarked, “I know it was fate. All the signs beforehand just fell into place. I feel every day I’m grateful and blessed because I would’ve never met somebody as wonderful as Jamal just randomly like that.”

In celebration of their tenth year, the duo is collaborating with Green Giant, as the brand commemorates its centennial anniversary.

Hinton commented, “Partnering with them for our 10th year makes this even more special.

“Sharing our 10th year — alongside Green Giant’s 100th anniversary — makes this holiday feel especially meaningful.”

Hinton also reflected on how their story continues to spread joy globally, gaining renewed viral status each Thanksgiving.

He added, “It’s amazing every year.

“People get so excited to see us. As a kid, I always dreamed of being famous, so to know our story brings joy to people — it means everything.”

Dench, however, admitted to being a bit uneasy about their frequent viral moments.

Laughing, she said: “I used to think people might get tired of us hogging up the news.

“But every time someone says the kindest thing, I’m reminded that we bring joy. That’s worth everything.”

While many Thanksgiving traditions fade away, it is heartening to see this unique friendship continue to thrive.
