Grimes, the Canadian musician, has addressed the online ridicule directed at Selena Gomez after a picture of her went viral.
Discussing celebrities and their looks is nothing new, but much of the discourse lacks justification. Grimes, at 37, has stepped up on X to show her support for Gomez amidst the unnecessary online scrutiny about her appearance.
Following the release of her music video for ‘In the Dark’ last week, the 33-year-old Gomez found herself at the center of unwarranted criticism. A specific freeze frame from the video sparked a series of comments on social media, with some speculating about ‘botched plastic surgery’.

Grimes took to social media to challenge the narrative, emphasizing the negative impact such conversations can have on mental health.
On October 26, she expressed: “I’ve been in the internet for like 48 hours and despite minor benefits I might have to leave. Watched this Selena Gomez video, besides a few weird derp shots that ppl were able to clip and super misrepresent how she looks she looks extremely beautiful, is prob one of the most beautiful girls.”
She continued by urging people to consider how it feels to be spoken about in such a way and the strength it takes for Gomez to endure such scrutiny. Grimes questioned why this behavior is tolerated and highlighted the broader impact on readers, especially young girls.
Grimes further pointed out the lack of celebrated women over 30 in entertainment and criticized the bullying that targets public figures.

She also suggested that accounts engaging in mass body shaming should be suspended, describing the behavior as a disturbing reflection of cultural dehumanization. She added, “Im not rly in the biz of even knowing what celebrities do, I have no context here, but this place is unhealthy as f**k and this being socially acceptable behavior is culture death – not just for the Selena or the writer but everyone who sees this and engages with this level of dehumanization.”
Her statement was met with agreement from other social media users who appreciated her speaking up against the negativity.
One supporter commented: “Im glad you’re saying something about this, its extremely weird and disturbing people feel the need to act this way towards other human beings.” Another added: “Thank you for this, I’m glad someone with a bigger voice is speaking about how wrong this all is.”
Gomez has not made any public comments regarding the online criticism.
Her representatives have been approached for comment.
