Grimes recently shared that she got a face tattoo a few months back, but to her surprise, “literally no one noticed,” including her parents. The 37-year-old Canadian artist, known for her relationship with Elon Musk, revealed the tattoo on Instagram through a bare-faced selfie.
The tattoo is a large red circle around her left eye, which Grimes describes as her favorite tattoo even though it has gone largely unnoticed. Writing on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, she expressed her amusement at its imperceptibility, giving a nod to the artist, @glamour_spells.
In another Instagram post, Grimes, a mother of three children with Musk, explained that she had spent years considering a face tattoo. Despite the long contemplation, the new ink seemed to blend seamlessly with her usual look. Earlier in January, she mentioned that the idea of a face tattoo had been tempting her for years and that she might proceed with it “just to spite everyone.”
Grimes praised the unique design, called cybersigilism, created by the artist @glyphomancer. This design melds cyberpunk elements with ancient symbols, which Grimes believes is groundbreaking in the realm of face tattoos.
Grimes, who has previously worked with the same artist, is known for her adventurous body art. Earlier this year, she got a hand-poked white ink design on her shoulder and chest. In 2021, she unveiled a large neo-tribal piece in white ink across her back, which she described as ‘beautiful alien scars.’
Despite having tattoos covering most of her body, Grimes mentioned there’s one area she avoids—her arms. She wants to steer clear of the “Harley Davidson biker look” and instead opts for tattoos that don’t alter her aesthetic significantly. She prefers tattoos that feel organic and are almost like birthmarks, often going unnoticed due to their subtlety.
