Gwen Stefani reveals that having a ‘third party’ in her marriage to Blake Shelton is essential for happiness

Gwen Stefani recently mentioned that a ‘third party’ has been instrumental in ensuring her marriage to Blake Shelton remains joyful. Stefani and Shelton started their relationship in 2015 following their respective divorces and later tied the knot in 2021. They first crossed paths in 2014 on the reality TV series The Voice, where they were both coaches during its seventh season.

An insider shared with People back then: “Blake and Gwen have begun dating. They’ve been supporting each other through a difficult time and they’re really happy together. Everyone is thrilled because they’re both incredibly nice people.”

A decade on, their bond continues to flourish, and the ‘Hollaback Girl’ singer has shared her insights into what makes their relationship work. The couple attributes their happiness to a ‘third party’—God.

Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, Stefani was asked about the ‘best advice she’s ever received on love.’ She replied, “Best advice would probably be, make sure you have a third party,” gesturing skyward.

Stefani has long been vocal about her faith, even endorsing the Catholic prayer app Hallow during the holiday period. She also gave a glimpse into domestic life with her spouse.

“I have the dogs right here; we have two couches … Blake’s on that couch and we’re like, ‘Hi’,” she described. “I would sit next to him but he’s gigantic and we don’t fit anywhere.”

With three sons from her previous marriage, Stefani has seen Shelton embrace his role as stepfather. He stepped down as a coach on The Voice in 2022 to concentrate more on parenting, despite not having biological children.

Shelton told People: “Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously. The kids see me as a very important person in their life. If I walked away from my career at this time, the only thing that I run the risk of is having regrets that I’m missing out on some more important things in life. For now, that’s our kids. This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again.”

During the same interview with Drew Barrymore, Stefani participated in a rapid-fire question round, where she unexpectedly shared that her favorite love song isn’t one of her own works.

“Shania Twain, ‘Still the One’ … that’s a perfect song,” she stated. The 55-year-old also mentioned she prefers a ‘date night in,’ saying: “I’m literally like — couch, blanket, cookies, chips.”
