People “Relax” In Hammocks That Hang Hundreds of Feet Above Ground In The Name Of Peace

If you’re afraid of heights, you better look away now.

These adventurous individuals you see suspended hundreds of feet above the ground in the Italian Dolomites are athletes who are commemorating peace.

The 26 men and women came together to sing, laugh, and lounge in 17 colorful hammocks strung up high in the sky.

In this same spot, a hundred years ago, fierce fighting broke out as WWI began. Some 18,000 soldiers lost their lives.

And it’s these lives that were honored at the 2015 Highline Meeting Monte Piana, an annual event that unites young people from all over the world through their shared passions for adventure and the sport of highlining.

“Just a hundred years ago, winters up here were characterized by bombs, grenades, and lots of pain,” the event co-founders Alessandro d’Emilia and Armin Holzer told My Modern Met.

“Our idea was to re-experience Monte Piana in friendship and peace with each other, accompanied by kindhearted feelings during the day, and lulled to sleep at night by magical silence.”
