Harvey Weinstein received a 15-year prison sentence Wednesday in his New York sexual assault retrial.
The 74-year-old former film mogul learned his fate in a downtown Manhattan courtroom, where he appeared in a wheelchair with his hands reportedly cuffed to his seat. Judge Curtis Farber delivered the sentence after prosecutors asked for 20 years and Weinstein’s defense team requested nine.
“You took what you wanted by force, and you have never accepted responsibility,” Judge Farber told Weinstein, according to reports from the hearing.
Weinstein addressed the court himself, denying the allegations against him while offering a partial apology. “I am not a perfect person, but I am a person who has made mistakes,” he reportedly said. He added: “I am not a violent man.”
Miriam “Mimi” Haley, 49, sat in the courtroom with her attorney Gloria Allred and delivered a victim impact statement describing lasting damage from the 2006 attack. Weinstein “abused his position and power,” Haley said, causing a “devastating effect on my life and security.”
“It is a life sentence for me,” she added.
The sentence includes five years of supervised release and requires Weinstein to register as a sex offender.
Haley testified during the June 2025 retrial about the night she says Weinstein assaulted her at his SoHo loft. She told the court that a driver picked her up, then 29, and took her to Weinstein’s apartment, where he almost immediately “lunged at” her on his sofa.
“I rejected him and he kept persisting, trying to kiss me,” Haley told the courtroom. She continued: “I was trying to get him off of me. I was trying to push him away from me. I was trying to get him to stop kissing me and grabbing me.”
Haley claimed Weinstein then “forcefully” performed oral sex on her. “I don’t remember all that much from the moment,” she said. “I decided to check out.”
Weinstein’s legal downfall in New York has been prolonged and complicated. A Manhattan Supreme Court jury first convicted him of assaulting Haley in 2020, resulting in a 23-year prison term. That verdict stood until April 2024, when the New York Court of Appeals overturned it in a 4-3 decision. The appeals panel ruled that testimony from “prior bad acts” witnesses should not have been admitted, finding it “was unnecessary to establish defendant’s intent and served only to establish defendant’s propensity to commit the crimes charged.”
The retrial before a new judge in Manhattan Criminal Court ended with the same core outcome—Weinstein found guilty of sexually assaulting Haley—though with a different sentence and under different procedural circumstances.
Weinstein has consistently maintained his innocence across all criminal charges, denying that he raped or sexually assaulted anyone. He remains incarcerated at Rikers Island, where he is already serving a 23-year sentence from a separate California sexual assault conviction. His health has reportedly declined during his time behind bars.
The California sentence stems from a 2022 Los Angeles conviction for raping an actress and sexually assaulting a model, charges that emerged as the broader #MeToo movement brought multiple allegations against him to light.
Weinstein’s case became a defining moment of the #MeToo era when initial reports of his alleged misconduct broke in 2017, leading to dozens of women coming forward with accusations spanning decades. The allegations included claims of sexual harassment, assault and rape by actresses, assistants and other women in the entertainment industry, many of whom described a pattern of meetings in hotel rooms and private offices where Weinstein used his considerable professional influence.
The 2020 New York trial represented the first major criminal prosecution to result from those accusations, with Haley and another woman, Jessica Mann, testifying as key witnesses. While the appeals court’s reversal wiped away that specific verdict, prosecutors pursued the case against Haley anew, resulting in the June 2025 conviction that led to Wednesday’s sentencing.
Weinstein still faces the remainder of his California prison term once his New York sentence is complete.
