A seasoned heart surgeon has outlined recommendations for lifestyle choices individuals should reconsider after turning 40.
As we grow older, we may notice that our endurance wanes, which can be perceived differently depending on the individual.
Dr. Jeremy London, a heart surgeon from Georgia, USA, has detailed various lifestyle adjustments to consider when reaching middle age through a video he shared.
With over 25 years of experience, Dr. London is a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon who aims to offer clear and relatable health insights via his newsletter, podcast, and social channels.
In a TikTok video, one of Dr. London’s sons inquires: “Dad, what things would you avoid after the age of 40?”
Dr. London provides four suggestions, noting that the first two are relevant to people of any age.

A significant lifestyle modification suggested by Dr. London is to cut back on or eliminate alcohol consumption.
“The top two on the list go for any age… the first one would be alcohol,” he explained. “If you really want to set the stage for yourself long term, limit or remove alcohol, it’s toxic to every cell in the body.”
He acknowledges the challenge, given alcohol’s ubiquity but emphasizes thoughtful decision-making regarding its consumption.
Exceeding recommended alcohol limits can heighten the risk of heart disease, stroke, liver issues, and different types of cancer, according to the National Health Service (NHS).
Alongside alcohol, smoking and vaping should also be avoided. Smoking is a major global health concern, with millions suffering from health complications due to the habit.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that smoking leads to eight million premature deaths annually.
“Next is smoking and vaping. I don’t think anyone would disagree that it’s bad for you,” Dr. London added. “It increases your risk of lung cancer, heart attack, and stroke – don’t vape, don’t smoke.”

Many of us have delayed sleep at some point, whether by scrolling on social media or engaging in ‘revenge bedtime procrastination,’ where sleep is postponed for leisure activities, as reported by The Sleep Foundation.
Getting sufficient sleep is vital for maintaining both mental and physical well-being. It rejuvenates the brain and is crucial to overall health.
“Don’t trade sleep for other activities,” Dr. London urged. “This is something that I personally struggle with.”
“Recovery is so important throughout our lives but it’s really important as we get older.”
He also highlighted the significance of maintaining healthy relationships as you age.
Calm suggests that toxic relationships can negatively affect mental health, potentially leading to increased anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem.
Such relationships may also affect physical health, causing changes in diet, sleep disturbances, and chronic health problems.
“Finally, avoid toxic people, focus and nurture on your relationships with the people that you care about and love because in the end that’s what truly matters,” Dr. London advised.
