A tragic update has been released regarding the young woman who vanished while scuba diving in Argentina earlier this month.
On 16 February, 23-year-old Sofía Devries, from Moreno, Argentina, took part in a dive intended to progress her scuba certification. She was diving with her partner and five other divers near Punta Cuevas Historical Park in Chubut province, according to Argentinian broadcaster Radio Rafaela.
After Devries did not return to the surface, emergency procedures were initiated, with alerts raised in the area. In the aftermath, three additional divers were transported to Hospital Andrés Ísola for medical care, and two required treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.
Authorities then began a coordinated search effort involving multiple agencies to locate the missing diver.

Radio Rafaela has since reported that Devries was discovered deceased two days after she went missing. She was found around 65 feet beneath the surface, close to the location where she was last seen.
An autopsy was carried out, with officials concluding that Devries died by drowning and that no third party was involved.
Her boyfriend, Leo, later shared his version of events on social media.
“Sofía is my girlfriend. We came to Puerto Madryn to get certified for a diving course,” he said, according to Diario De Cuyo. “Unfortunately, we had an underwater accident.”
He also voiced criticism of the response, telling the outlet, “They didn’t act quickly and focused on bureaucratic procedures instead of searching for her immediately and accepting help from other divers.”
Diario De Cuyo and Radio Rafaela reported that, on the day her body was recovered, Prosecutor Alex Williams told reporters Devries suffered a medical emergency during the ascent. Witness accounts stated her partner attempted to assist her, but could not save her.
Although investigators have ruled out both third-party involvement and indications of a criminal act, officials are still examining the circumstances to determine whether anyone responsible for her safety could bear partial liability, Diario De Cuyo reported.

The publication also said the prosecutor ordered the seizure of the scuba equipment Devries used, along with related documentation and other materials, so they can be examined.
Devries’ latest Instagram post is reportedly a year-end reel shared on 31 December 2025. In the caption — translated from Spanish — she expressed hope for new moments and experiences in 2026.
“Here’s to a year full of good stories, memories and experiences,” she wrote.
“Not long now and no one’s ready for the year of the [horse],” she added, celebrating ‘freedom and new beginnings’.
