Hilary Duff recently faced criticism online after expressing her distress over spilling coffee on her high-end Balenciaga handbag, a reaction that didn’t sit well with some of her followers.
The star of Lizzie McGuire shared the incident on her Instagram Story on Friday (October 24), describing what she termed a major coffee calamity.
“Spilled my entire coffee inside my purse and front seat,” she wrote. “A whole milk latte. Didn’t even get one sip.”
It’s understandable why that might upset anyone, right?
In a subsequent photo, the 38-year-old actress looked visibly upset while seated in the passenger seat, accompanied by the caption: “Then I called my husband and sobbed.”
Hilary, who has been married to musician Matthew Koma since 2019, also added a third image highlighting a blue Lola tampon in her bag, suggesting that hormones could have contributed to her emotional response.

For those curious, Balenciaga bags are far from affordable. The designer’s handbags often start around $3,000, with certain models fetching even higher prices based on the collection.
Although Duff doesn’t usually show off her designer items, Balenciaga is a brand adored by many celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, who revealed in January that she possesses 129 of these luxury bags, collectively valued at approximately $387,000.
While Kim may have a vast collection of Balenciagas, Hilary’s emotional reaction didn’t exactly garner widespread sympathy online.
Reactions were mixed, with people on X expressing their disapproval of the star’s behavior.
Amusingly, one user referenced a well-known quote: “People are dying kim.”

This quote refers to a famous moment from Keeping Up With the Kardashians, where Kim becomes upset when her $75,000 diamond earring is lost in the ocean.
Upon hearing the commotion, Kourtney exits her hotel room to inquire about the situation. Kim responds: “My diamond earring came off in the ocean and it’s gone.”
Kourtney then delivers the memorable line: “Kim, there’s people that are dying.”
Returning to the topic, others shared similar sentiments.
“BFD [Big f***ing deal] it’s just a purse,” one user wrote, while another questioned: “Like she can’t buy another one?”
A third simply noted: “Read the room.”
However, some individuals expressed understanding towards Duff, as they could empathize with her sorrow.
“Understandable,” tweeted one user.
Another commented: “She is the type of person that would only have one of these bags. Her cry is meaningful.”
Duff’s representatives have been contacted for further comment.
