Country singer Keith Urban could potentially receive over $11 million due to a clause reportedly included in the prenuptial agreement with Nicole Kidman, signed long before their separation this year.
Kidman and Urban became a well-known couple after meeting in Los Angeles in 2005. They began dating and married the following year.
The couple has two children, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. Reports suggest they separated earlier this year, with Kidman officially filing for divorce on September 30.
Court documents obtained by People reveal Kidman stated their separation date as September 30, citing irreconcilable differences for the split.
Following the filing, details about their divorce surfaced, including a significant request from Kidman concerning their children. Alleged details also emerged about their prenuptial agreement.
According to reports from Radar Online, Hello!, and other sources, one clause in the prenup related to Urban’s drug and alcohol use.
Urban has been candid about his struggles with substance abuse, mentioning that Kidman staged an ‘intervention’ shortly after their marriage.
In a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Urban explained how Kidman might have left him, saying: “I’m just so glad she didn’t, and she made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention, and it was done in such a way that the love in that room at that moment was just right. I was like, ‘Put the cuffs on, let’s go’.”
The prenuptial agreement reportedly stated Urban would receive $600,000 from Kidman for each year of marriage in which he abstained from drugs and alcohol, earning the section the nickname ‘cocaine clause.’
Over the course of 19 years, this would total just over $11 million.
At Kidman’s AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony last year, Urban spoke about her support for his sobriety throughout their marriage, stating: “We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens.
“Four months into a marriage, and I’m in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us. Nic pushed through every negative voice – I’m sure even some of her own – and she chose love. And here we are tonight, 18 years later. Her capacity to love is like no one I’ve ever met.”
Representatives for Urban and Kidman have been contacted for comment.
