How Ryan Reynolds Secured the Biggest Cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine with One Text Message

Major spoiler ahead…

Ryan Reynolds, celebrated for his sharp wit and quick tongue in movies, seems to carry that same charisma into his everyday life.

Reynolds’ latest portrayal of Deadpool in the anti-hero’s third film, Deadpool & Wolverine, has been a hit with fans, largely due to extensive fan service.

But how exactly does this fan service play out? Through cameo after cameo.

While superhero films have become known for their cameos in recent years, the fourth-wall-breaking, foul-mouthed mercenary manages to make it particularly effective.

Among the most beloved cameos in the film is Chris Evans’ appearance.

If you’ve been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe even a little, you know Chris Evans is Captain America. After playing the role in numerous films for over a decade, it’s no wonder he’s synonymous with the character. Get that man a shield and call him Cap.

However, in a humorous twist, Evans reprises another superhero role he once held—Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four.

According to Evans, it didn’t take much persuasion to get him on board. “I was so excited. […] Ryan’s a buddy. […] He just shot me a text saying, ‘Listen, might be a long shot, but would you have any interest in reprising something from 20 years ago?'”

“I said, ‘Oh my God! Of course.’ Honestly, Ryan might be the only guy that I would’ve done it for because he’s just got the Midas touch.”

Evans elaborated: “His self-awareness makes him almost invincible. He makes the joke before the audience gets a chance to make the joke. So if you’re going to revisit a character, and you have to find a way to make it work, Ryan’s humour makes just about everything work.”

He also mentioned that Reynolds’ sarcastic sense of humour allows actors to poke fun at their own careers without fear of backlash.

Reynolds himself isn’t shy about this, often mocking his role in the Green Lantern film throughout the first Deadpool movie. And honestly, the less said about that film, the better.
