A rare first edition of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” has fetched roughly $400,000 at auction after a fierce bidding war in Texas.
The hardcover copy, one of only 500 produced for library distribution, sold on October 14 at Heritage Auctions headquarters in Dallas. The hammer price came to £242,617.28 ($320,000), but the final tally including buyer’s premium reached £303,271.60 ($400,000), according to the auction house. All 5,650 hardback and paperback first editions hit shelves on the same 1997 publication date, yet the hardcover remains far scarcer.

Samantha Sisler, an auctioneer with Heritage Auctions, highlighted the remarkable condition of this particular copy. “This is personally one of my favourites,” she said. “The books were given to libraries for children to read. Finding one in this quality is quite remarkable.” The bidding stretched across four minutes before the gavel fell.
Collectors hunting for this ultra-rare edition can spot authentic copies through several telltale markers. The front board carries the Wendy Cooling review. Page 53 contains the famous misprint listing “1 wand” twice. The copyright page identifies the author as “Joanne Rowling” rather than her pen name. The rear board displays additional misprints, including “Philospher’s” and “Wizardry and Witchcraft.”

The sold copy showed light rubbing at spine ends and corners, with spine ends slightly pushed. Minor scratches marked the rear board, and the text bore light browning — though notably less than typically found in surviving copies, the listing noted. Bloomsbury published the original edition.
The same Heritage Auctions rare books signature event moved several other Rowling-signed volumes at lower price points. A first American edition and first printing of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” with the author’s signature brought £14,215.86 ($18,750) including premium. Signed first American editions of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” each sold for £3,032.72 ($4,000) with premium. A signed first edition of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” closed at £2,274.54 ($3,000) including premium.
Rowling’s debut novel launched a seven-book series that spawned a blockbuster film franchise starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Warner Bros. Is now developing a television series adaptation, with Dominic McLaughlin cast as the lead.
