A Northern California family is rebuilding after their blind dog accidentally triggered a house fire that killed both family pets and destroyed their home.
The blaze erupted last Thursday in Rough and Ready when the family’s 9-year-old blind German shepherd bumped the stovetop while trying to reach a box of burrito wrappers, according to a GoFundMe created for the family. Flames quickly spread across the ceiling and into the attic.
Martina, the homeowner, and her three sons escaped safely, but their two dogs did not survive the inferno. The kitchen was destroyed, and smoke and soot permeated every room, rendering the house and everything inside unusable.

“Thankfully, everyone is safe, but the loss has been overwhelming,” the fundraiser read. “Their two beloved dogs did not survive, the kitchen was destroyed, and smoke and soot spread throughout the house, leaving the home and everything inside unusable.”
Martina’s sons lost most of their possessions, including their clothes and toys. Though Martina and her estranged husband Jared are separated, many of her belongings and the boys’ things remained in the home when the fire struck.
“Jody is raising this fundraiser for Martina and her three sons after a devastating house fire destroyed the home,” the GoFundMe explained. “Martina and Jared are separated, but many of Martina’s belongings and the boys’ things were still in the home when the fire happened.”

The fundraiser aims to replace clothing, beds, toys, furniture, and other everyday necessities for the family. Donors have contributed $3,000 toward the $4,000 goal so far.

The incident underscores a growing pattern of pet-caused residential fires. This past summer, a dog in Maryland destroyed an entire home in mid-July by repeatedly jumping onto a kitchen counter and activating a toaster. Nearby combustibles ignited, and the resulting blaze killed three pets.
That Maryland family turned to crowdfunding as well, describing their own devastation in their GoFundMe. “12 weeks ago we lost it all and walked away with – quite literally – only the clothes we were wearing, nothing else,” they wrote. “It is from the help of all of you that we were able to eat, buy clothing and move from the hotel to this apartment and have the necessities.”

The Northern California fire has drawn particular attention due to the tragic circumstances: a disabled animal’s innocent attempt to find food led to destruction and death. The German shepherd’s blindness prevented it from understanding the danger its actions created.
Community members have responded to Jody’s fundraiser with donations and messages of support as Martina and her children face starting over from nothing. The family is currently staying elsewhere while determining their next steps.

The GoFundMe remains active as the family works to secure basic necessities and eventually find permanent housing.
