Individuals who identify as ‘abrosexual’ describe the nuances of their sexuality

People who identify as “abrosexual” have been shedding light on what this term means for them.

Various individuals have taken to platforms like TikTok and Reddit to share their experiences of being abrosexual. One person mentioned that it took her years to fully understand her own sexual identity.

As described by Medical News Today, abrosexuality involves a sexuality that is fluid and can change over time. This fluidity means that a person’s sense of sexual attraction can vary within different time frames, such as over months, weeks, days, or even hours.

Recognizing that sexuality exists on a spectrum, they state: “With abrosexuality, a person can identify with various sexualities over different periods. This means the group they experience either romantic or sexual attraction to can change from one timeframe to the next. An abrosexual person’s sexuality may change frequently over the course of hours, days, months, or years. Abrosexuality is also unique to each individual.”

On the other hand, Healthline emphasizes that it is not merely about “changing your mind” or opting for a different label, but rather “your actual experience changes over time.”

Emma Flint, an abrosexual writer, described her experience in Metro: “One day I felt like I was a lesbian, yet days or weeks later, I’d feel more aligned with bisexuality. My sexuality was fluid. Before learning about abrosexuality, I felt lost, as if out at sea. I also felt like a fraud because of how much I changed my identity when chatting with loved ones.”

She discovered her abrosexual identity at the age of 30, stating: “I didn’t learn about abrosexuality until two years ago, when I was 30. Up until that point, I’d struggled to identify what my sexuality was because it fluctuated so rapidly. There were times that I too scoffed, chastising myself for being so uncertain of who I was. It wasn’t that I couldn’t make my mind up, but rather my identity shifted.”

On TikTok, user @zoebriskey also elaborated on the concept:

“Abrosexuality is sexuality that’s fluid. It’s not pansexuality, though an abrosexual individual may identify as pansexual at some point in their lifetime. The term abrosexual comes from the beautiful Greek word ‘abro’ which means ‘delicate’ or ‘graceful’. To refer to the fluid or changing state an abrosexual individual experiences in their sexuality.”

Additionally, one Reddit user shared: “Your sexuality changes from time to time. Some people change between only two sexualities, some between many. Example, from lesbian to bisexual to straight to asexual. I personally go back and forth between being attracted to generally only men, and also being attracted to women.”

Though the term is not a recent invention, awareness of abrosexuality has been growing. In 2021, RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage posted the abrosexual flag on her Instagram. The flag features five colors: dark green, light green, white, light pink, and dark pink, and was reportedly created by an anonymous designer on Tumblr in 2013, as noted by The Standard.
