A 23-year-old British influencer is facing murder allegations in Dubai after the death of a man she reportedly met online, with a human rights campaign group warning that she could face the death penalty if convicted.
Brooke George, who is said to be from Kent, was detained after allegedly stabbing a British man with whom she had connected on Facebook while in the United Arab Emirates, according to Detained in Dubai, which is supporting her case.
The campaign group says George acted in self-defence and claims she fatally stabbed the man after coming under attack. It says the case is now moving through the UAE’s criminal justice system and that the accused remains in custody pending the outcome of the proceedings.
Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, said: “She reached for a knife after being attacked. Authorities must treat her as a domestic violence survivor while they investigate.”
She added: “The former John Lewis worker is defending a murder charge in the UAE after an altercation. Her world has been shattered and her family left in tears.”
Under UAE law, murder can carry the death penalty in the most serious cases, and the country’s criminal procedures allow defendants in capital cases to be represented by a lawyer. The UAE government also says an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a fair trial.
George was detained at Dubai International Airport as she attempted to fly back to the UK. She is currently being held at Bur Dubai jail.
The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by foreign nationals arrested in the UAE, where legal proceedings can be slow and where language barriers, differing evidentiary rules and local customs can complicate defence efforts.
