In Rio de Janeiro, residents of a tranquil apartment complex were left in shock after firefighters were summoned to inspect a peculiar smell emanating from one of the units. The discovery inside has since captivated both the local community and a wide audience online.
Brazilian news outlets, with a summary provided by PEOPLE, reported that neighbors in the Barra da Tijuca area were concerned about a strong and unusual odor coming from a nearby apartment. Firefighters responded to the call last Friday, October 10, leading to a police investigation into what they found.
Inside the apartment were the bodies of 33-year-old model and influencer Lidiane Aline Lorenço and her 15-year-old daughter, Miana Sophya Santos.
The discovery occurred after the two had not been seen for approximately five days. Authorities later confirmed that the mother and daughter were located in separate rooms, with Miana in the living room and Lorenço found in one of the bedrooms.
According to local outlet G1, there were no indications of violence on the bodies or within the apartment.
The Civil Police stated: “A forensic examination was conducted at the scene and found no evidence of assault.
“The bodies were autopsied, but it has not yet been possible to determine the cause of death. Further tests will be performed.”
The enigmatic details of the case have garnered significant online interest, particularly since Lorenço had a substantial presence on social media, boasting over 54,000 followers on Instagram.
Her posts frequently offered insights into her life as a model and medical student at a private university in Rio. Now, many of those posts are filled with comments from followers mourning her loss.
Lorenço and her daughter originally hailed from Santa Cecília, a small city in the southern state of Santa Catarina. Reports indicate that the influencer had relocated to Rio over five years ago, and her teenage daughter had recently joined her there.
After the discovery, both mother and daughter were laid to rest on Sunday, October 12, at Santa Cecília Municipal Cemetery.
The police have not yet disclosed any definitive cause of death, and investigations continue as forensic experts await the results of further tests. PEOPLE has also highlighted that local authorities have not responded to additional requests for comment.
