Influencer reveals the five outfit mistakes that instantly expose American tourists in Europe

While the United States is expected to welcome huge numbers of visitors this summer thanks to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, plenty of Americans are also planning their own European getaway.

The tournament began on June 11 and runs through July 19, with matches spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

But before zipping up their luggage, some travelers may want to rethink a few outfit choices. One influencer has shared what she believes are the most common style missteps made by tourists, particularly in fashion-conscious destinations such as Paris.

Europe boasts several of the world’s best-known style capitals, including Paris, Milan and London, so it’s no surprise visitors often want to look the part. That said, American fashion is hardly lacking, with New York also widely recognized as one of the global fashion hubs.

TikToker @aliceinparisofficial says that “Euro Summer” is ” all about looking effortless, but still polished”. She adds that the biggest mistake tourists make in places like Paris, Rome, Milan, Nice and Barcelona “is dressing too casually”.

Her advice broadly matches the pared-back, polished look often associated with summer dressing in major European cities, where lightweight fabrics, clean silhouettes and minimal accessories tend to be favored by many locals.

One of her first recommendations is to leave bold logo T-shirts at home. While tops like LA Lakers jerseys or “I Heart New York” shirts are popular staples, she argues they stand out for the wrong reasons in Europe.

“It instantly screams tourist,” she says. “Instead go for a clean well fitted [white] T-Shirt.”

She also advises against wearing a sports bra as a top while walking around cities like Paris. Although that look may be common in places such as LA or Miami, she suggests swapping it for a linen top or camisole instead.

Flip-flops are another item she says should stay out of the suitcase for city breaks. Though they may be comfortable and easy to wear, Alice believes they look “out of place” in Paris. Her alternative is minimalist leather sandals or lightweight sneakers.

Denim also appears more than once on her list of things to avoid.

According to Alice, “short and distressed” denim shorts are too relaxed for everyday city outfits and lean more toward “festival style” than Parisian summer dressing.

Instead, she suggests choosing tailored linen shorts or trousers for a more polished look.

She also discourages jeans or other heavy denim pieces in 30°C/86°F heat. In their place, she recommends linen trousers, lightweight cotton pants or a breezy skirt.

Not everyone agreed with her advice, though. Some viewers appreciated the suggestions, while others insisted they would “wear whatever they want” on holiday and said they “aren’t worried about blending in”.

Ultimately, the advice is meant to be taken lightly. There are no hard rules when it comes to vacation style, and feeling comfortable and confident is what matters most.

Still, travelers who want to avoid looking overly touristy in cities like Paris may find that simple, well-fitted basics and breathable fabrics go a long way, especially during the peak summer heat.
