More than six years after audiences were first introduced to Tammy Slaton on TLC’s 1000-lb Sisters, the reality star is entering a dramatically different phase of life.
At 40, Tammy is marking an extraordinary turnaround after years in which her weight and health battles defined much of her public story.
When 1,000-lb Sisters launched in January 2020, Tammy weighed 605 pounds, while her sister Amy was around 400 pounds. The series also looked at how their upbringing influenced their eating habits, with the sisters explaining that takeout was often the only option their family could afford.
“We grew up very poor,” Tammy shared during one episode of the series.
“We grew up with fast food mostly. There was five kids, so our mum worked three jobs. We didn’t really get much love and affection growing up. It was actually quite the opposite. We got told we were stupid, we were lazy.”
Although the show remained on air for six years, Tammy reached one of her lowest points in November 2021, when she was rushed to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.
Doctors diagnosed her with obesity hypoventilation syndrome, a disorder that slows breathing to a dangerous level and can cause carbon dioxide to build up while oxygen in the blood drops.
In the years since that health scare, Tammy has completely reshaped her life.
She shed more than 500 pounds through a combination of food addiction rehabilitation, bariatric surgery, and later reconstructive procedures to address excess skin.
Explaining the issue that remained, she said on the show: “The only problem is this excess skin is out of control.”
In 2025, Tammy underwent an eight-hour operation to remove the loose skin, something she said she had worked “really hard” to reach.
Tammy said: “After six years and losing over 500 pounds, I was finally approved for surgery. I was just overwhelmed with excitement.
“I’m pretty sure it was noticeable on my face how immediately shocked and then overwhelmed with joy I was.”
She later showed off another part of her transformation in 2025, debuting new teeth after previously speaking candidly about criticism she had received over her smile.
That same year also brought changes in her personal life. In April 2025, Tammy revealed she had been seeing Andrea Dalton, and by June 2025 she confirmed the relationship had turned into an engagement.
By July 2026, TLC said Tammy was married, with the network teasing wedding details as the next chapter in her storyline.
After Caleb Willingham died in June 2023, Tammy spoke openly about grieving and adjusting to life without her husband. She later moved forward with her new relationship, saying she had come out as pansexual and was building a very different future for herself.
Now, as she turns 40, Tammy’s life looks far removed from the years when her health struggles dominated the conversation.
