Insights after heroic civilian disarms suspected shooter in Bondi Beach attack

On the first day of Hanukkah, the Jewish community gathered at a beach in Sydney’s suburbs when at least two alleged gunmen opened fire.

The attack led to 12 confirmed deaths, including one of the gunmen involved.

A viral video from the incident highlights a man who heroically managed to disarm one of the attackers, possibly saving many lives in the process.

The hero has been identified as Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old father of two and owner of a fruit shop.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns praised Al Ahmed as a ‘genuine hero,’ describing the footage as ‘the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen.’

He stated, “There are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery.”

How did Al Ahmed manage to disarm one of the gunmen?

The gripping footage shows Al Ahmed skillfully using a car for cover before confronting the shooter. He then charged at the alleged attacker, securing him from behind and locking his arm around the gunman’s neck.

A fierce struggle ensued for control of the firearm the alleged shooter held. It’s been confirmed that Al Ahmed was shot twice during this confrontation.

Despite being injured, Al Ahmed managed to wrest the gun from the attacker, causing them both to fall to the ground before he retreated.

The video then shifts to the other alleged shooter discharging rounds from a bridge towards where the struggle had occurred.

Al Ahmed’s cousin shared with 7NEWS Australia that he sustained bullet wounds in his hand and arm.

He is currently hospitalized and reportedly making a good recovery.

Al Ahmed’s cousin also mentioned that he had no prior experience with firearms.

The attack has garnered global condemnation from leaders around the world.
