Speculation about a ‘cocaine clause’ might result in Keith Urban gaining significant wealth following his divorce from Nicole Kidman.
The couple, a notable Hollywood pairing in the 2000s, met in Los Angeles in 2005 and were married a year later.
Over their nearly two-decade-long marriage, they have had two daughters, Sunday Rose, now 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, and have made Nashville their home.
Despite their seemingly strong relationship, rumors of marital issues surfaced this year. On Tuesday, September 30, Kidman confirmed these rumors by filing for divorce in a Tennessee court.
The 58-year-old actress, who was previously married to Tom Cruise until 2001 and with whom she shares two children, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
An alleged clause in their prenuptial agreement suggests Urban might receive over $11 million as part of the separation.
While many details of the divorce remain undisclosed, Kidman’s move to become the primary residential parent is public knowledge. Her extensive wealth from her acting career, a production company, and partnerships with AMC Theatres and CBD company SeraLabs positions her well for the future.
The couple’s real estate portfolio is vast, comprising 11 properties valued at approximately $282 million.
The division of Kidman’s $250 million and Urban’s $75 million net worth, as reported by Celebrity Net Worth, is yet to be determined.
The country singer, aged 57, reportedly signed a prenuptial agreement before their 2006 wedding, entitling him to $600,000 for each year of the marriage—contingent upon abstaining from drugs and alcohol.
This ‘cocaine clause’ allegedly stipulates that Urban’s entitlement hinges on remaining sober throughout the marriage.
Urban has been open about his previous battles with addiction, including during the early phase of his marriage to Kidman.
In a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, he shared how Kidman initiated an intervention soon after their marriage.
“She made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention,” Urban said. “It was done in such a way that the love in that room at that moment was just right. I was like, ‘Put the cuffs on, let’s go.”
While attending the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, the musician confessed that just ‘barely four months’ into their marriage, his unresolved addictions threatened their relationship, stating it ‘blew our marriage to smithereens.’
“Four months into a marriage, and I’m in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us,” Urban said at the gala. “Nic pushed through every negative voice—I’m sure even some of her own—and she chose love.
“And here we are tonight 18 years later. Her capacity to love is like no one I’ve ever met.”
Since then, he has maintained sobriety, meaning that, over 19 years of marriage, he could potentially receive $11 million.
Both Urban and Kidman have been approached for comments regarding these developments.
