A journalist who conducted an interview with Nick and Rob Reiner in 2015 has shared his thoughts on a memorable comment made by the late director regarding his son.
The news of actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele’s deaths in their Los Angeles residence on December 14 came as a shock.
Initially, the deaths were announced without much detail, but it has since been disclosed that a homicide investigation is underway concerning the couple’s demise.
A family spokesperson released a brief statement expressing their profound sadness over the loss of Rob and Michelle.
The statement read: “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
As tributes poured in on social media for the couple, aged 78 and 68, many were also seeking answers.

The situation evolved further when it was disclosed that their son, Nick Reiner, had been taken into custody.
According to the LASD, Nick faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder, categorized as a felony, with the LAPD indicating involvement in gang activity.
Nick, the Reiners’ middle son, is known for co-writing the 2015 film Being Charlie, directed by his father and inspired by Nick’s personal struggles with addiction.
The film’s narrative centers on David, a successful actor running for governor, and his son battling addiction, highlighting their strained relationship due to the father’s stern approach to recovery.
Journalist Steven Zeitchik recounted a dinner he attended with the Reiners following the film’s premiere in 2015, sharing what Rob Reiner expressed about his son.
During the meal, an individual approached the table, sharing how the movie resonated with them, especially concerning their niece who had survived several suicide attempts, hoping the film offered solace.
Reflecting on the moment, Zeitchik noted: “Thank you, that’s the point,” Rob responded, radiating a sense of fulfillment. Rob’s personal anguish had a purpose—helping others feel less isolated, which was his aim with all his films, including this one.
Rob then turned back to their group, stating, “It was very hard. The number one job of any parent is to keep their child safe. And I hadn’t done that.” He was visibly emotional. “And now, here, I have done that. I kept him safe. He came out alive.”

Zeitchik has been reflecting on this conversation in light of the recent news of Rob’s passing.
Video footage has emerged showing Nick’s activities prior to his arrest by authorities near Exposition Boulevard.
The footage captures Nick inside a gas station store, appearing uneasy when a person who seems to be a law enforcement officer enters.
Nick was subsequently stopped by police shortly after leaving the store, a few blocks away, and is expected to appear in court today (Wednesday 17).
