Amid ongoing protests in Iran, a new threat has been directed towards the United States and Israel as demonstrators rally against the nation’s authoritarian regime.
The protests, which have persisted for two weeks, have reportedly resulted in thousands of arrests and over 116 deaths. The unrest has prompted a severe state response, including an internet shutdown across Iran.
In light of last year’s conflict involving missile exchanges between Iran and Israel, Iranian leaders have issued a dire warning to the US and its ally in hopes of discouraging intervention in favor of the protestors.
Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, declared that US military personnel could become “legitimate targets” if America involves itself in Iran’s internal issues, as suggested by President Trump.

This warning coincided with the protest’s 14th day, following Trump’s provocative social media comments suggesting Iran might be experiencing “FREEDOM, perhaps like never before.” He also stated that “the USA stands ready to help,” though the effectiveness of such a promise is uncertain given the widespread communication blackout.
During a broadcast parliamentary session, Qalibaf also announced a potential intensification of measures against demonstrators, stating: “The people of Iran should know that we will deal with them in the most severe way and punish those who are arrested.”
He further threatened attacks on American military facilities and Israel if Western nations support the protesters, which led to chants of ‘Death to America’ from Iranian parliament members.

Since December 28, protests have seen thousands confront security forces using improvised weapons, with limited footage showing street fires and other disruptions.
Adding to previous cautions, Qalibaf reiterated on Friday, prior to the weekend protests, that the government would “deal with them in the most severe way and punish those who are arrested.”
Reports from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal suggest that Trump is considering military actions to support the protestors. The State Department has also cautioned against underestimating Trump’s resolve, with a spokesperson stating, “Do not play games with President Trump. When he says he’ll do something, he means it.”
As reported by PA, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will have the final say on any retaliatory strike against US interests. Meanwhile, Trump contemplates another international engagement following Venezuela, just weeks into 2026.
