Warning: This article contains discussion of domestic violence which some readers may find distressing.
Brandon Sklenar, star of the film adaptation of “It Ends With Us,” has spoken out against those criticizing and spreading negativity about the movie and its participants online.
The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel has garnered a wide range of reactions, with some accusing it of glamorizing domestic violence.
Social media has been abuzz with opinions about the film, Blake Lively’s responses in interviews, and her promotion of the film’s sensitive themes. In response, Sklenar has a message for those quick to judge.
“It Ends With Us” tells the story of Lily Bloom (played by Lively), an aspiring florist who moves to Boston and finds herself in a relationship with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni).
However, their relationship quickly mirrors the toxic and abusive relationship of Lily’s parents.
The film’s promotion has been criticized for focusing on light-hearted floral themes, which some feel is mismatched with the movie’s darker subject matter. Additionally, Lively’s joking response to a journalist’s question about domestic abuse has also been scrutinized.
Glamour reports that the original novel has been criticized for being marketed as a romance book despite its heavy themes.
There have also been alleged behind-the-scenes dramas adding to the film’s controversies.
Sklenar, who plays Lily’s childhood friend and later love interest, Atlas Corrigan, released a statement supporting Hoover and female cast members, addressing the ongoing controversies.
In a post on Instagram on August 20, Sklenar wrote: “Hi everyone, I wanted to take a minute and address all of this stuff swirling online.”
“Colleen and the women of this cast stand for hope, perseverance, and for women choosing a better life for themselves. Vilifying the women who put so much of their heart and their soul into making this film because they believe so strongly in its message seems counterproductive and detracts from what this film is about.”
“It is, in fact, the opposite of the point. What may or may not have happened behind the scenes the scenes does not and hopefully should not detract from what our intentions were in making this film. It’s been disheartening to see the amount of negativity being projected online.”
Sklenar shared that someone close to him experienced a relationship similar to Lily’s and felt a responsibility to bring this story to life. He noted that his friend credits Hoover’s book and the film with saving her life.
The actor emphasized that everyone involved in the movie was aware of the responsibility they had. He stated the film is intended to serve as a “harsh reality check for the men who need to get their s**t together and take responsibility for themselves and their actions.”
He argued that the film aims to “inspire,” “validate and recognize,” “instill hope,” “build courage,” and help people feel less alone, while spreading love and awareness.
Before people spread negativity online, Sklenar urged them to consider who it helps and if their opinions are based on any fact. He concluded: “Let’s be a part of something better together. A part of a new story being written for women and all people everywhere. Lead with love and please be kind.”
