J.K. Rowling reveals what she really thinks of Harry Potter reboot series as it faces fan backlash

J.K. Rowling has shared her thoughts on the forthcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation after being tagged by an excited fan online.

The first full trailer for the series arrived earlier this week, quickly sparking widespread conversation — and not all of it glowing.

There’s been a clear split among viewers: some are eager to return to the Wizarding World after disappointment surrounding the Fantastic Beast spin-off, while others are questioning whether a new take is needed at all.

A number of fans have said that although it’s interesting to see fresh faces attached to such well-known characters, the preview didn’t capture a key ingredient they associate with the franchise: the sense of wonder.

On social media, some criticism focused on the trailer’s color grading, alongside complaints that it offered little (if any) visible magic — a feature many consider central to Harry Potter’s appeal.

Still, not everyone is skeptical. Plenty of fans say they’re counting down the days, even if the first episode isn’t expected until the Christmas period.

One particularly enthusiastic viewer on X tagged Rowling to share their reaction, prompting the author to respond with her own verdict on the show so far.

“Hey J.K. Rowling, The trailer for the new Harry Potter looks blood marvelous. I cannot wait, and as it seems to me, neither can the rest of the world.”

“It’s going to be incredible. I’m so happy with it.”

After Rowling’s reply, other fans chimed in, saying they’re curious to see what the series expands on and how it might differ from the original film adaptations.

“Glad to hear it :).

“It seemed totally unnecessary at first because the movies were great. The more I thought about it, though, I’m actually kind of excited to watch the story unfold in a new way with more detail. If it’s bad, oh well. If it’s good, cool.”

Another viewer highlighted the prospect of visual and design changes, suggesting the show could offer a fresh interpretation of familiar settings.

“From what I have seen in the trailer, it looks very promising. I like how the design of Hogwarts will differ from the movies. It offers us another vision of the Wizarding World. Just like Jim Kay, Mary Grandpre, and other artists did with your books.”

A third person focused more on the emotional pull of returning to the franchise, describing how the trailer became a shared moment in their home.

“I’m so happy that you’re happy. My household all got together to watch it. It reminded me of my 10th birthday party at the Leicester Square preview when we cheered for you as children. Thank you for a lifetime of happy memories!”

Whether the series can meet expectations — and recreate the feeling that first drew audiences to the Boy Who Lived — will become clearer once episodes finally begin to roll out.
