Jamie Foxx has revealed how comedy became his lifeline during recovery from a near-fatal 2023 medical emergency.
Foxx, 58, appeared on the Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast alongside his daughter Corinne Foxx, 32, to discuss the brain bleed and stroke that struck him while filming Back in Action in Atlanta. The Oscar winner described the profound confusion and frustration that marked his early rehabilitation, particularly grappling with well-meaning comments about receiving a “second chance” at life.
“What was wrong with my first chance? This doesn’t happen to anybody. How does it happen to me?” Foxx recalled thinking during those initial stages of physical recovery.
To cope with extensive memory gaps and the trauma of the ordeal, the comedian leaned heavily on his natural instinct to perform. During his hospital stay, Foxx explained that he was “always joking all the time” because he “only had comedy to lean on.”
He even slipped into exaggerated impersonations of Hollywood peers including Denzel Washington, a tactic that occasionally left medical staff and loved ones uncertain about his true mental state.
“That’s the only way I could find myself,” Foxx explained. “Because here’s the trueness of it. Like, when this all transpired, I went back to meet the 60 nurses that kept me alive. Because I don’t quite remember.”
Corinne, who became the family’s primary spokesperson during the crisis, described the adrenaline-fueled urgency that overtook her while managing her father’s care behind closed doors.
“When you’re in it, you don’t have time to be scared because your brain overhauls adrenaline,” Corinne shared.
She continued, “You’re in caretaking mode, and you’re never really ready to take care of your parent. You’re never ready for that moment, but when it happened, I was like, ‘I got this.'”
Corinne first alerted fans on April 12, 2023, announcing on social media that her father was recovering after experiencing an undisclosed “medical complication.” The family maintained tight privacy around the specifics of his condition for months as Foxx underwent intensive treatment.
Foxx eventually addressed the public directly in an emotional video update, expressing gratitude toward his medical team and family for shielding him during his most vulnerable period.
“I did go through… I went to hell and back,” Foxx told fans at the time. “And my road to recovery had some potholes as well. But I’m coming back. And I’m able to work.”
In the viral moment that first signaled trouble, news broke in spring 2023 that Foxx had been hospitalized in Atlanta while shooting the Netflix action-comedy Back in Action with Cameron Diaz. Initial reports offered scant details, with Corinne’s brief social media statement providing the first official confirmation.
