Vice President JD Vance mishandled the National Championship Football trophy, and social media users are buzzing about the incident’s most memorable moment.
On March 14, during Ohio State University’s visit to the White House, Vice President JD Vance accidentally ‘fumbled’ the National Championship Football trophy, causing it to separate into two pieces.
Videos of the event have circulated on Twitter, featuring a clip where Vance lifts the trophy with both hands, only for it to quickly split apart in mid-air. The base fell to the floor, but fortunately, someone nearby managed to catch the top half.
Vance retrieved the base and attempted to reassemble the trophy as onlookers watched, some in shock and others laughing. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, standing a few feet away, appeared oblivious, continuing to smile and pose for photos while holding a helmet.
Reactions from the public were swift.
White House reporter Philip Melanchthon Wegmann shared a clip of the incident, commenting later in the thread: “The trophy was made in America by UAP Polich Tallix in New York.
“The award consists of two separate pieces—the trophy and the base, with the design intention that the trophy itself is the part to be held aloft, not the base.”
Another Twitter user pointed out: “The top part of the trophy was pulled out, which unbalanced the trophy base in Vance’s hands, and it fell.
“The proper way is for the trophy to be handed to them, not require them to pick it up.”
Critics of Vance seized the chance to mock him.
One user wrote: “The best part is watching them all laugh at him!”
Another added: “Could be worse like our democracy, our economy and our future falling apart..,oh wait…”
A third remarked: “That trophy is a metaphor for the US economy.”
Vance has since addressed the misstep.
Yesterday, on April 14, Vance took to Twitter to respond to Wegmann’s video of the two-part trophy incident.
His caption read: “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”
One user replied: “Nice try, Boss Baby. If you knew anything about CFP you would have known the base is detachable.”
Another questioned: “You think that’s funny?”
And another concluded: “Just say you fumbled and did something wrong, but that’s light-years away from happening.”
