Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has expressed a striking forecast concerning the future of human civilization.
With the rapid progression of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, there is growing unease about AI’s potential impact on the world and the direction Earth might take in the coming decades.
While the remarkable benefits of AI are widely acknowledged, enthusiasm for its advancements is often tempered by concerns, particularly regarding some of the more troubling aspects of artificial intelligence.
For instance, OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has conducted research focusing on which jobs are most susceptible to being replaced due to AI’s development.
The research team used a specialized test called GDPval to evaluate how technology compares to human workers in nine different sectors across the US, and whether AI could eventually undertake tasks currently performed by humans.
The study identified 44 types of jobs that are most at risk as AI becomes more prevalent in everyday life.
Despite the concerns, Bezos remains optimistic about technological developments, believing that humanity is on the verge of entering a golden age.
“I don’t see how anybody can be discouraged who is alive right now,” Bezos remarked to an audience at Italian Tech Week.
Bezos also envisions a future where many people will be living in space within the next few decades.
“In the next kind of couple of decades, I believe there will be millions of people living in space,” he asserted.
“That’s how fast this is going to accelerate.
“They’ll mostly be living there because they want to.
“We don’t need people to live in space. If you need to do some work on the surface of the moon or anywhere else, we will be able to send robots to do that work and that will be much more cost effective than sending humans.”
Bezos dismissed any pessimistic views on AI, emphasizing its potential to enhance our lives.
“Civilizational abundance comes from our inventions,” he stated.
“So 10,000 years ago, or whenever it was, somebody invented the plough, and we all got richer … I’m talking about all of civilization — these tools increase our abundance, and that pattern will continue.”
In related news about space habitation, NASA has outlined an ambitious vision that could see individuals living on the moon within ‘lunar glass’ domes in the future.
According to The Telegraph, NASA is supporting a project designed to develop glass domes that can be constructed on the moon.
This bold plan involves utilizing particles known as ‘lunar regolith’ found on the moon’s surface to fabricate extensive glass domes where astronauts could eventually live.
The project is led by the California-based company Skyeports, with CEO Dr. Martin Bermudez expressing optimism that one day entire cities on the Moon could be interconnected by these glass structures.
“You will never replicate Earth, but this is something that gets pretty close, and we could even put them into orbit one day,” Dr. Bermudez explained.
“Space has always been kind of fascinating for me, and my background was as an architect so I had the chance to start exploring how we can build structures on the Moon or Mars.”
