Jelly Roll’s Real Name Revealed as Singer Files for Divorce From Bunnie Xo

As attention turns to Jelly Roll and Bunnie XO this week, it’s worth looking back at the origin of one of the most distinctive stage names in music, and the personal story behind how Jason Bradley DeFord ended up being known to the world as Jelly Roll.

The nickname did not come from a label meeting or a polished rebrand. It started at home when he was a child, then took on a life of its own once classmates picked it up.

DeFord was born on December 4, 1984, and was raised in Antioch, just outside Nashville, Tennessee.

According to the singer, the name first came from his mother, who used it when he was young.

“My mother named me that whenever I was a little chubby kid,”

“Been fat my whole life. I spent the next 30 years trying to grow into the name. I think I’ve done it.”

What really cemented the nickname, though, was that someone at school came to the exact same conclusion without knowing it was already being used at home.

DeFord has said a classmate known as One-Arm Clay looked at him and decided he should be called Jelly Roll too, which made the whole thing impossible to shake once it spread around school.

“One-Arm Clay was like, ‘We should call you Jelly Roll, I’m One-Arm Clay and you’ll be Jelly Roll,'”

“I was like, ‘My mama calls me Jelly Roll.’ Then once the high school starts calling you something, that’s the kit and caboodle.”

Even with the name now recognised everywhere, he has admitted there is still a difference between what the public calls him and what people close to him say.

On the Taste of Country Nights podcast, he explained that those who know him personally usually shorten it.

“I think people call me Jelly. If you know me, or feel like you know me, you call me Jelly,”

“I respond to Jelly better than Jelly Roll. If you say Jelly Roll, I kinda go, ‘Aww [expletive].’ But if somebody goes, ‘Hey Jelly!’, I think they know me. Delete the Roll, man.”

The name has stayed with him through every stage of his career, from his early years in rap to his eventual breakthrough as a country star. He has said he began writing songs when he was around seven years old, inspired in part by seeing how powerfully music affected his mother during her struggles with addiction and mental health.

That long path to mainstream success eventually produced a major crossover moment with Son of a Sinner, followed by the success of Whitsitt Chapel in 2023, which reached number one on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Top Independent Albums charts, while also climbing to number two on the country chart. His rise continued through 2024 and 2025 as he expanded from country radio into larger pop, rock and awards-show audiences.

His personal life has drawn almost as much public attention as his music, especially his relationship with Bunnie XO.

The two first crossed paths at one of his shows at the Las Vegas Country Saloon, back before his mainstream breakthrough. At the time, he was still a long way from headlining big venues, reportedly living in a van and performing for a very small crowd. They spoke backstage, though Bunnie was in another relationship then.

After that relationship ended, Bunnie asked a friend for Jelly Roll’s number. She has said he would often call and text her for advice, including conversations about his daughter Bailee from a previous relationship.

Their bond later became romantic when Jelly Roll returned to Las Vegas to shoot a music video and Bunnie offered him a place to stay.

He eventually proposed onstage during a Yelawolf and Deftones show in Las Vegas.

[I wanna know] will your fine a** marry my white trash a** tonight in Las Vegas?

That same night, the pair got married at The Little White Chapel.

Jelly Roll also shares a son, Noah Buddy, with an ex. In 2016, he and Bunnie were granted primary custody of Bailee due to her mother’s substance abuse issues.

At one stage, the marriage hit serious difficulty after Jelly Roll was unfaithful, and the couple briefly split.

‘one of the worst moments of his adulthood’

When reflecting on that period, he also said he

‘did a lot of work to repair that relationship’

Later that same year, the two reconciled.

Bunnie went on to launch the Dumb Blonde podcast, which became a major success and featured guests including Dolly Parton and MGK.

As her profile grew, Jelly Roll’s music career surged as well, with ‘Son of a Sinner’ reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s US Country Airplay chart.

Bunnie also stepped away from the sex industry and deleted her OnlyFans account.

The couple later returned to The Little White Chapel in Las Vegas to renew their vows.

Bunnie also shared publicly that they had decided to begin IVF treatment.

“W/all odds stacked against us, it’s always been hard & we have only just begun.”

In another headline-making moment, Bunnie said that after Jelly Roll’s 275-pound weight loss, his penis had become

‘severely bigger’

Most recently, Jelly Roll filed for divorce from Bunnie XO in May 2026 in Tennessee, according to reports of court records. The reported filing came after nearly 10 years of marriage, and neither has publicly commented in detail on the split.

For fans, it means the story of Jelly Roll has taken another major turn: the singer born Jason Bradley DeFord is still one of country music’s biggest names, but his personal life is once again making headlines.
