Jennifer Aniston recently shared insights about her childhood experiences in New York City.
Although Aniston is globally renowned as one of the most successful actresses, with an estimated net worth of $320 million, her upbringing contrasts starkly with her current life.
Originally from Sherman Oaks, California, Aniston was raised in New York. During an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, Dax Shepard inquired about her childhood in the city.
Aniston, known for her role in Horrible Bosses, reminisced, “We lived in this building on 92nd in Columbus. But the block between Columbus and Amsterdam and then Amsterdam Broadway, that was all abandoned buildings.”
She further recalled, “I was on a bus by myself at 11. Can you imagine? Just by yourself, throw your key in your sneaker and ‘see ya mom’.
Aniston also mentioned having to occasionally walk around the block due to a sniper in one of the abandoned buildings, describing it as ‘just normal’ for that time.
“As I got older I was mugged,” she added, noting that she faced multiple muggings. Despite these experiences, Aniston stated she ‘didn’t feel fear’ and continued to walk home alone at midnight.

This isn’t the first occasion Aniston has spoken about her upbringing. She has previously talked about witnessing her parents’ marriage falling apart, a situation that has influenced her own adult relationships.
Her parents, Nancy Dow and John Aniston, ended their marriage when she was young.
In a 2023 interview with WSJ, Aniston expressed, “I think that it comes from growing up in a household that was destabilized and felt unsafe, watching adults being unkind to each other, and witnessing certain things about human behaviour that made me think: I don’t want to do that.”
She continued, “I don’t want to be like that. I don’t want to experience this feeling I’m having in my body right now. I don’t want anyone else that I ever come in contact with ever to feel that.”
Aniston has had two marriages, first to Brad Pitt, and later to Justin Theroux.
Currently, the 56-year-old actress is dating Jim Curtis, a hypnotist, life coach, and author. They have been associated with each other since July of this year.
