Jennifer Lawrence’s Husband Begged Her to ‘Get a Hotel Room’ After Beauty Product Made Her Smell Like Fish

Jennifer Lawrence’s husband issued a hotel ultimatum after a prototype hair mask left her reeking of fish.

Lawrence, 36, revealed the marital standoff during a recent interview with The Cut tied to the launch of her new beauty and haircare brand, Mes. The Oscar winner tested every formula herself during development, including one unscented mask she wore for four straight days that delivered stellar conditioning results alongside an unbearable marine odor.

“My husband was like, ‘If you don’t wash your hair, you have to get a hotel room,'” Lawrence recalled. She refused to back down, continuing to work with cosmetic chemists until the formula achieved the same deep-conditioning effects without the offensive smell.

The pungent trial-and-error period ultimately yielded a launch lineup of three products: a repair mask, a restyling serum, and a volumizing mist. Mes officially debuted on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Lawrence, who has no plans to leave acting behind, described the creative rush of building a business as unexpectedly fulfilling.

“There is an undeniable energetic thing that happens when you’re creating things, whether it’s a movie or a product. I got that same electric buzz I get from building a character. It’s like, Well, I have to follow this because it’s the same animal,” she explained.

The venture also triggered significant self-doubt. “I have to pretend I’ve made the greatest thing on earth,” Lawrence admitted. “Otherwise it gets too scary. It’s a form of forced manifestation.”

Lawrence and Maroney, an art dealer, wed in an intimate Rhode Island ceremony in October 2019. The couple share three-year-old son Cy and welcomed their second child in April 2025. The famously private pair keep their children away from public attention, though Lawrence has shown willingness to joke about the messier realities of her off-camera life.

The fishy hair mask episode stands as one of the more vivid examples of that unfiltered approach. While Maroney drew a hard line at sharing their home with the stench, Lawrence’s persistence through the testing phase reflected the hands-on commitment she brought to Mes’s development.

Lawrence’s second child arrived just months before her brand launch, adding new complexity to an already packed schedule of filmmaking and entrepreneurship. She has not indicated any slowdown in either realm.
