Jim Carrey has announced that he has decided to step out of retirement because he ‘needs the money’.
In 2022, it was disclosed that Carrey would be retiring after a long and successful career that has spanned many years.
Carrey is best known for his comedic roles in films such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Nonetheless, he has also demonstrated his talent in more serious roles in films like The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and The Number 23.
Although he had mentioned he would consider returning only under exceptional circumstances, especially if the script was ‘delivered by angels and written in gold ink,’ it appears Carrey has reconsidered.
The reason for his return is rather straightforward.
In an interview with Kit Kuvir for Access Hollywood, Carrey previously mentioned his intention to retire after completing the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
When Kuvir informed him that Dolly Parton wanted him to portray her musical partner in a biopic, Carrey replied: “That’s great. But I’m retiring. I’m saying this quite seriously.
“Unless, of course, the angels suddenly bring me some script written in golden ink, and I realize that it is very important for people to see it, then maybe I will come back.”
He further stated: “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like, and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Carrey would be returning to his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The second film concluded with Robotnik’s dramatic fall from a massive robot, leaving audiences curious about his fate.
This will be the third installment in the series, joining Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which together grossed $870.8 million worldwide.
One might assume that the script met Carrey’s high standards, but during a conversation with an AP Entertainment reporter on the red carpet, when asked about his previous retirement statements, the actor confessed he might have exaggerated.
“That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah,” Carrey jested.
“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
In addition to Carrey, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will feature Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’ Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, with Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow.
The film is scheduled to be released in the US on December 20, 2024.
