Joaquin Phoenix faces potential Hollywood blacklist after abruptly exiting project

Joaquin Phoenix might face potential blacklisting from Hollywood projects after he abruptly exited a movie just days before its scheduled production.

Throughout his career, Phoenix has delivered a myriad of compelling and entertaining characters. However, he chose to step out of the limelight for a new project directed by Todd Haynes.

Phoenix, who will next be seen in Joker: Folie à Deux, initially proposed the untitled project to Haynes and the producers at Killer Films, agreeing to participate in its creation.

The film was reportedly set to depict an intense gay romance in the 1930s, with Danny Ramirez, known for his role in Captain America: Brave New World, set to co-star.

Nevertheless, a mere five days before production was due to commence in Mexico, Phoenix withdrew, leaving the cast and crew in disarray. At present, the role will not be recast.

The actor has not provided a clear explanation for his departure. However, Christine Vachon, a producer from Killer Films, shared an article about the incident in a since-deleted social media post, calling it a ‘nightmare’.

Sources close to the project have spoken to The Hollywood Reporter, highlighting the significant impact of Phoenix’s exit.

“There’s been a huge amount of outrage,” one studio executive shared with the publication.

Allegedly, some producers have discussed the possibility of blackballing Phoenix due to his abrupt departure. However, they’ve conceded that his involvement in the highly-anticipated Joker sequel ensures he remains a significant figure in the industry.

Reports suggest that members of the producing community have considered legal action against Phoenix for his sudden exit, akin to past instances where stars were accused of breach of contract.

Nonetheless, an agent unassociated with the Haynes movie informed THR that Phoenix is unlikely to face severe repercussions and might resolve the issue by repaying the production costs already incurred.

“As long as they threaten, he’ll settle. It’s nothing to him,” the agent claimed.

While Phoenix hasn’t detailed his reasons for leaving the project, he previously mentioned in a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper that he often feels ‘petrified’ when taking on a role.

He also conveyed nervousness about not being able to find ‘the right kind of place to express’ his ideas.
