Joe Manganiello Reveals Brutal Side Effects From Decade-Long Battle With Deadly Mystery Illness

Joe Manganiello has revealed further details about a serious health battle that left him coping with ‘excruciating bouts of chronic pain.’

The Magic Mike actor has been opening up about a previously undisclosed health ordeal ahead of the release of his memoir, Bloodlines, which is due out on October 13, 2026.

According to the book’s synopsis, a “cascade of autoimmune-related illnesses” attacked his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system, leading to a seven-year battle marked by chronic pain, a life-saving organ amputation, and repeated medical crises that doctors struggled to explain.

Manganiello said in a video posted to Instagram that he had spent “the better part of a past decade” dealing with a “deadly mystery illness” while keeping it largely private.

“For the better part of a past decade, most people don’t know this, but I suffered in silence battling a deadly mystery illness,” he told his followers.

“Other than a very small circle of family and friends, I hit it from the rest of the world,” he said, adding that he ‘saw the best doctors in the world,’ although none of them could explain what started his illness.

He also said he underwent years of treatment using “high-powered biological drugs,” but they ultimately failed to help.

Manganiello went on to explain that the treatment brought harsh side effects that continued for years.

“And then in attempts to buy myself time I underwent very serious operations and procedures that mutilated parts of my body and left me so weak at times that I couldn’t stand up or walk,” the 49-year-old revealed.

He then said he spent months “heavily medicated while dealing with excruciating bouts of chronic pain.”

His memoir, Bloodlines, is described as following his search for answers not just about his illness, but also about his family history and spiritual identity. Manganiello has said the book explores themes of ancestry, inherited trauma, masculinity, faith, and the question of whether the experience was part of a larger purpose.

“Maybe what happened to me wasn’t random,” he said.

Concluding, Manganiello added:

“If you’re out there and you’re suffering, there’s hope.

He has also told People that the period was “the most brutally difficult time” of his life and said he would not wish it on anyone else, while also describing it as a transformative experience.

Many of his followers responded in the comments with supportive messages, thanking him for speaking openly about his condition.

“Love you Joe thank you for being so courageous,” one penned.

A second supportive fan wrote: “Right now, all I want is to give you the biggest hug, amico mio.”

“Joe! So sorry you’ve been suffering! You’re a warrior.Sending love,” a third comment read.

At this stage, the actor has not publicly confirmed the specific illness he was diagnosed with.
