Josh Hutcherson has reflected on a moment of friction he experienced with the filmmakers while working on The Hunger Games.
More than 10 years after the first movie arrived, the 33-year-old actor has said there were times he didn’t completely agree with the creative choices being made on set.
One sequence in particular has stuck with audiences: Hutcherson’s character, Peeta Mellark, uses paint to blend into a rock face so effectively that he’s almost impossible to spot.
The moment has lived on well beyond the film itself, in large part because it quickly turned into a widely shared meme.
While the story establishes earlier that Peeta has artistic talent, plenty of viewers still questioned how he could realistically achieve such perfect camouflage in the middle of the arena.
Hutcherson has now said he thought the whole thing was “silly,” adding that he did voice reservations when it was being filmed.

“I was like, ‘Look, I know this dude’s a baker, but how is he doing this? Baking sourdough is not painting. How the f**k did he do that?'” he told GQ. “Why didn’t someone stop it? There are so many people who could have stopped it. They let it happen to me. I just lay there.”
Even so, Hutcherson made it clear that the infamous “rock Peeta” scene hasn’t soured him on the series, and he remains happy to have been involved with the franchise.
“I could talk all day about Hunger Games,” Hutcherson shared. “I think [they] are amazing books. They’re fantastic movies.
“They stand for something important and real. The themes of authoritarianism and overpowering, violent governments are very present. They didn’t listen to The Hunger Games.”

The comments arrive as the franchise prepares for its next theatrical release, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, slated to land in cinemas in November.
As with the recent prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (released in 2023), Sunrise on the Reaping draws from Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel of the same name.
The new film is expected to dig deeper into Panem’s past, serving as another prequel set before the events of the original trilogy and focusing on the period leading up to the 50th Hunger Games—the edition won by Haymitch Abernathy, the future mentor to Katniss and Peeta.
Fans have been thrilled by reports that Jennifer Lawrence will return as Katniss in the upcoming installment after not appearing in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Hutcherson has also been linked to the project, with BBC reporting last year that he is rumored to appear in Sunrise on the Reaping.
