Judge Frank Caprio shared an emotional video on TikTok shortly before his passing.
The well-loved 88-year-old, often referred to as ‘the nicest judge in the world’, succumbed to pancreatic cancer in a hospital yesterday, August 20. He served as a judge in Providence, Rhode Island, for almost forty years.
In a heartfelt message from his hospital bed on Tuesday, August 19, he requested that his fans keep him in their thoughts and prayers as he battled the illness.
“Last year, I asked you to pray for me. It’s very obvious that you did ’cause I came through a very difficult period,” he expressed.
“Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital. Now, I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more. And so I asked you again, if it’s not too much that you can remember me in your prayers.
“I’m a great believer in the power of prayers. I think the Almighty above is looking over us. So remember me, please.”
A television crew captured him in his courtroom, where he was known for delivering justice with empathy, often showing leniency where appropriate.
In one widely shared moment, he empathized with a mother who had lost her son by forgiving her $400 in traffic tickets and fines.
In another instance, he waived a substantial fine for a bartender earning less than $4 an hour for running a red light.
Following the news of his death, a statement was posted on his Instagram account. It read: “Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
“He will be remembered not only as a respected judge but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.”
The statement continued: “In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”
Just a day before, an update on his account conveyed, “Judge Caprio wishes to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your prayers, love, and support while he is in the hospital.
“Your kindness and encouragement mean the world to him. He and his family are deeply grateful. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers today.”
