Julianne Moore has recently expressed her surprise at discovering that her children’s book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been ‘banned’ by the Trump Administration.
In addition to her acclaimed roles in films like Still Alice and The Room Next Door, Moore is also known for her series of children’s books, starting with the publication of Freckleface Strawberry in 2007.
This book series draws inspiration from a nickname given to Moore at the age of seven due to her ‘abundance of freckles and very red hair’.
“She hoped that they would go away when she grew up, but they didn’t,” the series’ official website notes.
The storyline revolves around a young girl who is ‘learning to embrace her unique appearance’, emphasizing that ‘what makes you different also defines who you are’.
Despite the positive themes, Moore revealed on Instagram that her debut book, simply titled Freckleface Strawberry, has been removed from schools operated by the Department of Defense, as per the Trump Administration’s directive.
On her Instagram post dated February 16, Moore stated: “Freckleface Strawberry is a semi-autobiographical tale about a seven-year-old girl who initially dislikes her freckles but learns to accept them, realizing she is unique ‘just like everybody else’.”
“I wrote this book for my children and others to remind them that despite life’s challenges, we are all connected by our shared humanity and community.”
“I’m particularly surprised by this action because I am a proud alumna of Frankfurt American High School, a #DOD school that was based in Frankfurt, Germany.”
“Having grown up with a father who is a Vietnam veteran and served his career in the #USArmy, I take immense pride in his service. It’s disheartening to think that children like me, with a parent in the military and attending a @dodea_edu school, will miss out on a book penned by someone who shares similar life experiences.”
“I can’t help but question what is deemed so controversial about this children’s picture book that it warranted a ban by the US Government.”
“This situation deeply saddens me, as I never expected this in a nation where freedom of speech and expression are constitutionally protected rights. Many thanks to @penamerica for highlighting this issue. #FAHS #frecklefacestrawberry @uyenloseordraw @thebookgrp.”
