Most people can only imagine what they’d do if their dad started seeing a global pop icon like Katy Perry. Getting overshadowed in that way could easily spark resentment or jealousy.
But Justin Trudeau’s eldest son appears to have taken it all in stride. After the former Canadian prime minister and Perry confirmed their romance in December, 18-year-old Xavier has now spoken publicly about the relationship for the first time.
Born the same year the 41-year-old singer broke through with her chart-topping hit I Kissed a Girl, Xavier explained that Perry has made a real effort to connect with him as things become more serious with his father.
The up-and-coming musician opened up during an Instagram collaboration with influencer Hob G, as the two chatted while plugging McDonalds’ and Drake’s new ‘Afters Meal’ partnership.

As he sipped blue-raspberry Nite Sprite and dug into McDonald’s take on poutine, Xavier told Hob that he actually likes Perry.
Hob then brought up what he called the “elephant in the room” — Trudeau dating one of the biggest stars in music. Xavier confirmed he’s met Perry and said they didn’t just exchange pleasantries; they spent significant time talking.
“She’s cool, she’s nice,” he said in the promo clip. Xavier also revealed that Perry — the artist credited with selling 151 million records worldwide — offered him guidance as he pursues music himself.
“We talked for hours, talking about my music. She gave me advice and next steps for me and stuff,” he added. Rather than an awkward dynamic, Xavier’s comments suggest Perry has taken on more of a supportive, mentor-like role.

The last few years have reportedly been a major period of change for Xavier, with Trudeau stepping down from office in March 2025 and then, not long after, being linked to one of pop’s most recognisable names.
On July 28, Perry and Trudeau were seen out for dinner at what TMZ described as a “swanky restaurant in Montreal.” The sighting came shortly after Perry, known for hits such as Roar, finalised her split from actor Orlando Bloom following nine years together.
Perry later went public with the relationship in December, sharing that Trudeau had joined her for at least the Tokyo portion of her ‘Lifetimes’ world tour.
Alongside snaps featuring sumo wrestlers and airy Japanese pancakes, she also posted photos of herself and Trudeau on low-key outings, captioned: ‘Tokyo times on tour and more ( ◠‿◠ )’.
Even if the timeline has made the romance seem sudden to outsiders, a source told People it came down to Trudeau’s determination. They said: “The only reason this turned into something real is because Justin has been so persistent.
“She wasn’t looking to date when they first hung out and she certainly wasn’t looking for a boyfriend.”
