Blackpink has become a force to be reckoned with, being named Time magazine’s 2022 Entertainer of the Year.
The four-woman band Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé, are the second K-pop artists to receive the prestigious title, following in the footsteps of BTS, who won it in 2020.
Discovered and trained by YG Entertainment, a prominent South Korean record label, the quartet quickly gained worldwide fame after their 2016 debut. Their first LP, “The Album,” sold more than one million copies in less than a month after its 2020 launch.
Blackpink’s success is evident in their achievements, such as performing at Coachella in 2019 and “Pink Venom” at the VMAs this year. The members reflected on their journey to international stardom in a special Time feature to commemorate the award.
“We put in a lot of work so we could look like superwomen,” rapper Jennie told Time. “We’re very normal girls, at the end of the day.”
The international girl group Blackpink is experiencing unprecedented success due to their distinct cosmopolitan backgrounds. Jennie, who was born in South Korea and raised in New Zealand, said the band’s unique perspectives allow them to “perform from the heart.”
Jennie is joined by Rosé, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Lisa, who is from Thailand, and Jisoo, the only one of the group born and raised in South Korea.
They have embarked on their “Born Pink” world tour, performing across Europe until the end of the year. With such a diverse range of backgrounds, it is no surprise that Blackpink has become one of the biggest girl groups in the world.
