Kai Trump, 19, announced Wednesday on Instagram that she has undergone wrist surgery, sidelining her from University of Miami golf competition.
The freshman shared a hospital-bed selfie showing her arm in a cast, telling followers the procedure followed an injury she first suffered at September’s Golfweek Fall Challenge. President Donald Trump’s granddaughter had initially tried to avoid going under the knife.
“While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches, and athletic training staff I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,” Trump wrote on Instagram.
She traced the moment of impact back to that opening tournament of her college career.

“Let’s just say there must have been some cart path underneath that ground because it was very hard. Hit it, it felt like a shock on my arm,” Trump said in her earlier Instagram post about the injury.
The damage lingered through her round. “Then on the 10th hole, I hit my driver, and I felt like I tore it again,” she added.
Doctors found what Trump described as a “little sliver” of damage along her ligaments. Before opting for surgery, she had been receiving stem cell treatments from pain management specialist Dr. Jeffrey Weigers.

Trump’s statement Wednesday struck a determined tone about the months ahead. “It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination,” she wrote.

She thanked her support system, including coaches, family and teammates, for standing by her through the setback.
“Having the right people by your side makes all the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Trump wrote.
She singled out Dr. Michelle Carlson, a hand surgeon at Manhattan’s Hospital for Special Surgery, for special praise.

The social media personality and vlogger, who arrived on campus in August to begin her freshman year, closed her statement with a promise to return. “For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process. I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever!” she wrote.

The surgery comes during an emotionally turbulent stretch for Trump. The Miami campus sits just under two hours from her family’s home in Jupiter, Florida, and she has been open about the difficulty of leaving home.
She broke down in tears in an earlier social media post about the challenges of starting college, saying she was “struggling right now” with the transition.

That family backdrop includes her mother Vanessa Trump’s breast cancer diagnosis this year. At the 2026 ESPY Awards, Trump gave an update to reporters that her mother was “doing better” and had entered the second phase of treatment.

Trump’s golf injury and subsequent surgery interrupt what was meant to be her first full college season. The freshman had been attempting to compete through the wrist damage before ultimately deciding on surgical repair.
Her recovery timeline remains unclear, though her statement emphasized that it will “take time” before she can rejoin her Hurricane teammates.

The announcement marks another pivot point in a freshman year that has already brought public visibility, personal challenges, and now a significant athletic setback for the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr.
