Kevin Spacey reflects on homelessness seven years post sexual assault scandal

Kevin Spacey has shared how his perspective on fame has evolved since experiencing homelessness.

The actor, who rose to prominence in the 80s and starred in acclaimed films like *American Beauty*, *Se7en*, and *Horrible Bosses*, faced a significant backlash from the film industry due to a series of sexual assault allegations. Between 2017 and 2022, Spacey was accused of over 30 such offenses.

In 2017, following the initial wave of these allegations, Spacey was removed from the popular Netflix series *House of Cards*. Despite always denying the accusations, Spacey’s career took a hit.

In 2022, additional charges were brought against him in the UK, including four counts of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. However, when the case went to trial the following year, Spacey was acquitted of all charges.

Despite his legal vindication, the repercussions left Spacey without a home. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, he reflected on how his life has changed post-fame.

Spacey mentioned a transformative memory from 1986 while performing in the play *Long Day’s Journey into Night* alongside John Lemmon in London. As they made their way from the Theater Royal back to their hotel, Lemmon was approached numerous times by fans.

When Spacey expressed curiosity if such attention bothered Lemmon, he recounted Lemmon’s advice: “Listen, a**hole, try to remember this if you ever become famous. It might be my 65th time, but it’s their first.”

These words stayed with Spacey, though he admits he has only recently embraced them fully.

Reflecting on his past, he acknowledged that he “was to some degree… always a jerk” when he was at the height of stardom. Though he made efforts not to be difficult, he often viewed interactions with fans as a nuisance.

“My relationship with fame has very much changed,” Spacey noted, crediting this change to the ‘twist of Lemmon’ philosophy.

He delights in engaging with people and cherishing conversations, recognizing the kindness and generosity he encounters.

Rejecting past habits of trying to avoid public attention, Spacey now embraces being recognized and interacting with the public. “I’m walking with my head high, no glasses on my face, no hat, nothing to hide,” he stated, finding joy and comfort in this new phase of his life.
