From Street To Safety: Abused Dog Khaleesi Given Second Chance By Bulgarian Charity

Stray dogs are a serious issue in Bulgaria, with many animals suffering neglect and abuse living on the streets. But one charity is working to save abandoned pets and give dogs like Khaleesi a new chance at life.

Rudozen Street Dog Rescue (RSDR) was told of a very sick dog wandering the streets back in May. So staff set off on a 70km journey to find the puppy.

The dog’s story was recounted in a Facebook post: “[Volunteer] Tony called the dog and she came straight over to him. She was cowering as she [was] approached but she was just so desperate for contact.”

“The poor girl had suffered so much and yet was still so loving and trusting.”

“She was so thin and had no hair. She was covered in fleas and ticks, her ears were torn and her skin was so sore. A front leg had been broken and healed badly.”

The volunteers rushed the dog back to the shelter where she was given medication and antibiotics.

She was also wormed, bathed and treated for demodex, ticks and fleas, losing much of her dead skin in the bath.

RSDR wanted to give the dog a strong name as she fought for her life and settled on Khaleesi, inspired by the Game of Thrones character.

And slowly, with a lot of love and care, Khaleesi got stronger and stronger.

“Despite her abuse and neglect and the discomfort she is in, she is so happy to be around people and manages to wag her tail.”

Khaleesi is still recovering but, when she is strong enough, RSDR hope to find her a loving home because “she truly is a beautiful girl.”

We’re just pleased to see Khaleesi giving us a big doggy smile. She’s totally unrecognizable!
