Tyler Boebert will serve jail time after his toddler son was found wandering unsupervised outside his mother’s Colorado home.
The 21-year-old son of Rep. Lauren Boebert, 38, received at least 20 nights in custody with work release privileges after pleading guilty to misdemeanor child abuse without injury, according to Courthouse News Service. The charge stemmed from a July 2025 incident in which his young son was discovered roaming outside the Republican congresswoman’s Windsor residence.
Deputy District Attorney Brice Rudolph told the Weld County court on Friday that this marked the third time in 2025 the child had been found wandering alone. The previous incidents included one instance near a busy road and another by a body of water, Rudolph said.
“Once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a pattern,” he told the court.
Tyler Boebert, who became a father at 17, faced an additional child abuse charge in February after his then-2-year-old son was again found roaming unsupervised around Lauren Boebert’s house. Defense attorney Joseph Gavaldon said that charge was later dropped.
During Friday’s hearing, the congresswoman directly addressed Judge Michele Meyer to plead for leniency.
“Mercy here, your honor, is not softness. Mercy is the difference between correcting the father and orphaning a child for the hours that matter most,” she said.
“I want to talk to you about what kind of father my son is. He works and comes home. That is not a talking point. He is not a troubled man drifting through life,” the MAGA-supporting representative continued.
“The actions before you are not acts of cruelty. It’s a failure of communication.”
Gavaldon also vouched for his client’s parenting, telling the court Tyler Boebert had installed locks and cameras at his own home to prevent the boy from escaping. The attorney described the toddler as a “Houdini” going through a “Lewis and Clark” phase of adolescence.
Judge Meyer acknowledged the defendant’s apparent remorse but emphasized the danger of the repeated incidents.
“It appears as though Mr. Boebert has taken this seriously, but I can’t ignore the fact that these are two incidents that put his son in serious harm’s way,” she said. “Thankfully, nothing happened.”
The judge opted against the maximum 30-day sentence but imposed 12 months of probation alongside the jail term, Fox 8 News reported.
The sentencing adds to a growing legal history for the eldest of Lauren Boebert and ex-husband Jayson’s four sons. Last month, he was arrested on sexual exploitation of a child and multiple other charges, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. Those charges reportedly involve an alleged sex tape filmed in early 2024, when Tyler would have been 18, with a then-17-year-old girlfriend who contacted police after the video was leaked. He was freed after posting $10,000 bond.
In 2024, Tyler Boebert faced 22 criminal charges including five felonies following alleged thefts in Colorado. He pleaded guilty that October to one count of attempted identity theft; the remaining charges were dismissed under a two-year deferred judgment requiring 80 hours of community service.
Following his arrest in the exploitation case, Rep. Boebert issued a brief statement.
“I love my son,” she said.
“We take these allegations very seriously and pray for everyone affected during this challenging time,” the congresswoman added.
Gavaldon, Lauren Boebert and the Weld County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to inquiries.
