Kevin Reddington launched a furious attack on a single male juror he accused of robbing Lindsay Clancy of an acquittal after her triple-murder trial ended in a mistrial.
The 36-year-old mother had faced charges in the January 2023 strangulation deaths of her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan — at the family’s Duxbury home before attempting to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, an act that left her permanently paralyzed. Clancy never denied killing the children but pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, with her defense arguing she suffered from acute postpartum psychosis and severe overmedication.
Speaking to reporters outside Plymouth Superior Court on Friday, Reddington revealed that 11 of the 12 jurors had voted to clear his client before the holdout blocked a unanimous verdict. The panel had spent more than 36 hours deliberating across seven days before submitting a final note to Judge William Sullivan stating with a “heavy heart” that they could not reach consensus.
Reddington placed sole blame on the lone dissenter, claiming he refused to apply legal standards of reasonable doubt despite acknowledging doubts about the case.
“[Clancy] was robbed by this man,” Reddington told reporters, adding that he hopes the juror can “sleep at night.”
“They know they were robbed by one man, for whatever his agenda was, who stole seven weeks of the life of these other jurors that were so attentive, so beautiful, so wonderful,” he continued.
Tensions inside the jury room had escalated sharply on Thursday when the foreperson sent a rare note to Judge Sullivan alerting him that one individual “made statements acknowledging doubt, but refuses to apply it to the verdict as the law states.” Reddington responded by filing emergency motions seeking the juror’s dismissal for alleged bias against severe mental illness, but Judge Sullivan rejected the request. The judge ruled that the court could not interfere with internal deliberations or side with “one juror or 11.”
Following the mistrial declaration, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz told reporters his office had not yet decided whether to pursue a retrial. Reddington warned that doing so would be a serious mistake for prosecutors.
“If I was [Cruz], I would probably say I don’t think I want to do a retrial because he’s going to lose,” Reddington said, describing his client’s life as a complete “tragedy” and adding that his “heart breaks” for her.
Clancy will remain held at Tewksbury State Hospital ahead of a status hearing scheduled for September 29.
