Lionel Richie has been admitted to an intensive care unit following his concert in St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday.
The “All Night Long” singer, 77, checked himself into a local hospital for testing after the show, according to reports Monday. The four-time Grammy winner had appeared to struggle through his final number, with witnesses saying he asked for a chair while performing his signature hit.
This marks the second health scare to hit Richie during his current concert run. In June, the “American Idol” judge fell ill onstage and abruptly cut short his opening night at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota. That night marked the launch of his 26-city North American co-headlining trek with Earth, Wind & Fire.
Videos from the Minnesota show captured Richie forced to sit down multiple times while attempting to perform “Dancing on the Ceiling.” The singer later took to Instagram to reassure his followers about his condition.
“Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love,” he wrote in the post. “I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you.”
Despite that earlier episode, Richie had continued with the tour schedule, making his way to the St. Louis area for Saturday’s performance. The Missouri show came weeks after the Minnesota incident that had first raised concerns about his ability to maintain the demanding road schedule at 77.
The St. Louis concert followed the same troubling pattern as the June episode, with the singer visibly struggling and requiring assistance to complete his set. Where the Minnesota show had ended early, the Missouri audience watched as Richie requested seating to get through “All Night Long.”
Richie has built a decades-spanning career that includes hits like “Hello,” “Easy,” and “Dancing on the Ceiling,” earning him a place in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His current tour paired him with the legendary funk group Earth, Wind & Fire for what was billed as a major summer concert event across North America.
The singer’s representatives have not yet issued a statement regarding his ICU admission or the status of upcoming tour dates.
