Lizzo has been candid about her sex life, revealing she hadn’t been truthful in the past about when she lost her virginity.
The “About Damn Time” singer discussed the topic with Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco, explaining that she didn’t have sex for the first time until she was in her 30s.
“I was a late bloomer,” she said on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast.
As the hosts tried to work out when it happened, Lizzo said it was in 2020.
“Isn’t that crazy?” she added. “I wasn’t even thinking about it… I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy.”
The admission stunned the room, and Lil Dicky asked whether she would have gone through with it if a Grammy hadn’t happened.
Lizzo has since collected four Grammys, with her first arriving in January 2020 when she was around 32. She laughed off the question and pointed out that it didn’t happen on the night of the awards, but not long afterward.
“I feel a weight off my chest right now,” she shared. “It was so embarrassing. I was in a friend group of girls. We were all girling one night and it was like, ‘Wait, Lizzo are you a virgin?’”
She continued: “I said, ‘I love the D.’ I said that. And it held me over for a little while.”
Lizzo also said her first kiss didn’t happen until she was 21 — and described it as a bad experience.
“Y’all have no idea. It was religious for me too. Like, when we were teenagers at my church, we all made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage. And them, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me,” she shared.
“It was a New Year’s Eve thing and he forced it on me. I was really mad and I was like, ‘My first kiss is ruined.’ I was so mad,” Lizzo continued.
While some people assume waiting is unusual, researchers suggest the stigma has eased in recent years, as attitudes among Gen Z and millennials continue to shift.
Lizzo is currently dating Myke Wright, and the pair publicly confirmed their relationship in 2022.
They’ve largely kept things out of the spotlight, though Lizzo offered a small glimpse into their relationship during a 2022 interview on The Howard Stern Show.
“I am very much in love with Myke. 100 percent. There’s nobody else I’m going to be with for the rest of my life.”
More recently, Lizzo said Wright influenced how she thinks and talks about body changes, introducing her to the phrase “weight release.”
“I want to be very intentional about the words that come out of my mouth because there’s young people who are watching me and they’re experiencing what I’m putting into the world,” she said on On Purpose with Jay Shetty. “They’re applying it to their own experience and their own life just like I did when I was a kid.”
