If you’re fond of starting your day with pancakes or cereal, you might want to reconsider your breakfast choices.
Breakfast is often touted as the most crucial meal of the day, with many people encouraged to consume it. The options are plentiful, ranging from cereal and waffles to eggs and bacon.
Personally, I have a weakness for an almond croissant or fluffy pancakes. However, there’s a particular type of breakfast that has been shown to slow down the aging process significantly, with one scientist claiming it helped reverse his biological age by 15 years.
The scientist in question is Dr. Eric Verdin, CEO and president of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. At 68, Verdin has spent the past decade optimizing his health by altering his diet and lifestyle.
He adheres to the Mediterranean diet, a regimen praised by experts for its health benefits. It has been suggested that those following this diet could potentially add an extra decade to their lifespan.
This diet emphasizes plant-based foods, healthy fats, and moderate amounts of lean proteins, fish, and dairy.
“When you look at populations that are on this type of diet, they really are the healthy ones,” Verdin explained.
Discussing breakfast specifically, Verdin cautioned, as per Business Insider: “The worst breakfast you can possibly imagine is your sort of cereal bowl with a glass of orange juice because this is essentially a bowl of sugar, sugar, sugar.”
So, what does Verdin consume to maintain a biological age 15 years younger than his actual age? He usually eats eggs, avocado, and salmon with wholemeal bread for breakfast, often opting for olive oil on his bread instead of butter.

Eggs and salmon offer healthy sources of fat and protein, helping you stay full longer, while eggs and wholemeal bread provide fiber that nourishes the beneficial bacteria in your gut.
Verdin also highlighted why savory breakfasts are preferable to sweet ones: “Breakfast should be savory. So no pastries, no orange juice, no fruity yogurt. What it does, it sets you up for the whole day of bouncing up and down with your blood sugar.”
Fluctuating blood sugar levels can lead to energy crashes and cravings throughout the day.
Perhaps that’s why I often find myself dozing off at my desk in the afternoon.
