Kaegan Jude Solet, 47, has been arrested for slaughtering four relatives in a Louisiana stabbing rampage that left a 6-year-old boy critically wounded after he ran for help.
The child had been staying overnight with his grandmother Letha Verret and great-grandmother Verna Mae Verdin when Solet allegedly attacked him with a knife Saturday evening at the home on Ashland Drive in Houma, 63 miles outside New Orleans. Despite multiple stab wounds, the boy sought help from neighbors.
“He knew he was injured and he was just worried about making sure someone knew his family was in trouble,” relative Brandon Thiel told WVUE.
Police found the wounded child near the home before discovering the gruesome scene inside, where Verdin, Verret, Verret’s brother Paul Verret, and Paul’s partner Krissy Lynn Parfait were all pronounced dead. The boy was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
“Please pray for my little man as he recovers he’s so so strong and such a fighter. Current status (he’s stable) thank everybody for reaching out,” the boy’s father wrote in a Facebook update.
Terrebonne Parish deputies captured Solet around 10:30 a.m. Sunday following an hours-long manhunt, initially transporting him to a hospital for medical care. He was released Tuesday and promptly arrested on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder, the sheriff’s office said. Solet, wearing blue scrubs and bright yellow footwear with his left arm in a cast, was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex without bond.
Verdin, a Walmart bakery worker just two weeks from retirement, lived in the main house with her daughter Letha while Paul and Parfait stayed in a backyard camper, according to WVUE. Solet was known to the victims — he had fathered one of their children, Thiel told the outlet.
Letha leaves behind seven children, four of them adults and three minors. “This devastating tragedy has left the Verret family facing an unimaginable amount of grief, uncertainty, and hardship,” Thiel wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser. “The loss is especially profound for Letha’s minor children, who are now having to cope with the sudden loss of their mother, grandmother, and uncle all at once.”
Paul Verret had been inseparable from Parfait, family members said. “Krissy and Paulie. Like they just seemed like they belonged together I will miss both of yall,” Letha’s son CJ wrote. “No matter what Krissy was still family, she sat with us for thanksgiving, Christmas, whatever the case was she sat at the table with us.. Krissy I promise we won’t forget about you neither.”
The quadruple murder suspect had faced arrests in two previous stabbings in Houma, including another killing. He was first charged in January 2019 for the stabbing death of homeless man Kemple Paul Scott Lovell, who was found dead with several stab wounds. A grand jury declined to indict him for lack of evidence.
Solet was arrested again in December 2019 and charged with attempted murder after Cindy Boudreaux, 59, was found lying in a pool of blood in a motel room, gasping “don’t let me die” as paramedics tended to her, the Houma Courier reported. Boudreaux accused Solet of attacking her with a wine bottle before stabbing her numerous times. Prosecutors cited security camera footage and Solet’s DNA found inside the hotel room, but a jury found him not guilty in November 2023.
Officials have not revealed what time Solet allegedly began his stabbing rampage, but are asking residents for home security footage between Saturday at 6:30 p.m. And Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
