Luigi Mangione Spared Death Penalty as Judge Updates on Dual Charges

A judge has determined that Luigi Mangione will not be facing the death penalty when he stands trial for the murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson.

In December 2024, Mangione was taken into custody at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, just a few days following Thompson’s death in New York City.

The 50-year-old CEO and father of two, Thompson, was fatally shot as he exited the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue, leading to a vigorous manhunt by law enforcement officials.

In a recent development, US District Judge Margaret Garnett has thrown out a federal murder charge against Mangione, citing technical deficiencies in the charge.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
