Lundberg Family Farms has expanded its recall of white jasmine rice to cover more than 27,000 packages sold through Walmart, Target, and Whole Foods.
The Butte County, California-based producer first issued the recall in April, and regulators say consumers across a dozen states should check their pantries for purple two-pound bags bearing specific lot codes and best-by dates. The affected packages carry either a best-by date of Feb. 1, 2027 with lot code 260201, or a best-by date of Feb. 2, 2027 with lot code 260202.
The Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class II, a designation the agency uses for situations where exposure to a tainted product could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” The specific hazard, according to the FDA, is “potential contamination with foreign materials.”
A company spokesperson said that the problem was contained quickly. “The affected product was removed from store shelves several months ago,” the spokesperson said. The representative added that “the incident was isolated to a single production run, and no illnesses were reported from consumption of the affected product.”
Lundberg Family Farms itself initiated the recall, the FDA noted, and the company is advising customers who purchased the rice to either discard it or return it to their retailer for a refund. The firm told Sacramento station KCRA that it has received no reports of customers getting sick from the product.
The geographic reach of the recall extends well beyond Lundberg’s home state. In addition to California, consumers in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin should inspect any Lundberg white jasmine rice purchases against the recalled lot codes.
The expansion to more than 27,000 packages marks a significant widening of what began as a more limited recall action this spring. The purple-packaged product’s presence at three of the nation’s largest retail chains — Walmart, Target, and Whole Foods — amplified the potential consumer exposure, prompting the broader regulatory notice.
The recall covers only the specified white jasmine rice variety and does not extend to other Lundberg Family Farms products or rice types. The company, based in the rice-growing region of Northern California’s Butte County, has built its brand around organic and eco-farmed grain products.
